Mackay region

The Mackay Shorebird Area lies adjacent to the city of Mackay in north Queensland and extends along the coastline from the Mackay Port wetlands and the entrances of the Pioneer River and Bakers Creek, around Sandringham Bay and Dudgeon Point, to Dudgeon Beach. Key habitats include mangrove-lined estuaries, low-energy sandy beaches, and extensive intertidal mud and sand flats, with rocky platforms occurring at Dudgeon Point. The Dudgeon Point wetlands and salt flats are also part of the shorebird area. 

This region is internationally important for Siberian Sand-Plover and Far Eastern Curlew, and nationally important for Bar-tailed Godwit, Greater Sand-Plover, Red-necked Stint, Grey-tailed tattler, Eurasian Whimbrel, Pacific Golden Plover, Great Knot, Terek Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Grey Plover, and Double-banded Plover.
