The Bushland Beach sites are part of the Townsville region Shorebird Area, which extends from Halifax Bay to Rollingstone Creek. The estuaries of Bohle and Black rivers are characterised by sandy beaches and extensive intertidal sand flats, interspersed with mangrove-lined estuaries and broad mudflats. Inland, the Bohle River floodplain supports swamps and claypans. This combination of estuarine, intertidal, and floodplain habitats provides rich foraging and roosting opportunities for migratory shorebirds.

The SBA is internationally important for Great Knot, and nationally important for Great Knot, Greater Sand-Plover, Grey-tailed Tattler, Red Knot, Far Eastern Curlew and Siberian Sand-Plover.
