Red-necked Phalarope

Phalaropus lobatus

IUCN status: Least concern

 

Identification

Non-breeding: Oval-shaped eye patch and grey-brown patch on hind-crown and nape. Grey patch on sides of breast and grey streaking on flanks.

Breeding: Head slate-grey with small white patch in front of eye. Chin and throat white. Chestnut band side of neck down to foreneck. MAles are smaller and duller.

Distribution

 

Distribution

Rare but regular migrant to NW Australia. Vagrant south.

Migratory habits

Migrates south to the Arabian sea and Pacific Ocean west of Ecuador and northern Peru.

Breeding

Breeds in northern Eurasia and North America.
